Trails of San Mateo County:
Northern Coast, Skyline & Foothills

Trails of San Mateo County: Northern Coast, Skyline & Foothills is a complete map of parks and beaches from Daly City and Pacifica south to Half Moon Bay. This new map expands our old Trails of the Coastside map (published 2003) to include half a dozen parks along Skyline Blvd. along the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and foothills parks in San Bruno, San Carlos, Woodside and Redwood City. Highlights include second-growth redwood groves in Purisima Creek Redwoods and El Corte de Madera Creek Preserves, stately oak and madrone woodlands, in Huddart and Wunderlich Parks, flowery grassland habitat at San Bruno Mountain and Edgewood Park. Along the coast, there are many new bike paths and trail connections (with more to come).

This map started out as a simple update of our 2003 Trails of the Coastside, which mapped the coast and mountains from San Bruno mountain south to Martins Beach. So much has changed that in 2013 we started an interim xeroxed Coastside map of just the core area from Pacifica to Half Moon Bay, updated regularly with recent changes. The material cost and hand-assembly made them impractical for wide distribution, so we set about to apply all the lessons of the interim map to our big Coastside map...and make it bigger! By the time the dust settled, our new map covers so much additional area (in almost the same space as before) we had to give it a new name!

DELAYED - EXPECTED MID OCTOBER, 2017 (watch for updates)

In Summer 2017 we made great progress formatting the new map, hike old and new trails, and rewrite much of the text. Then another 150 guidebook maps arrived to be drawn. And writer's block. BUT we are perilously close to figuring out the esential map text for the Skyline and Foothill parks, and then it's off to the printer.

We anticipate maps by mail from Pease Press, and in stores by mid-October.

if you'd like a sneak preview, I've posted big PDFs of the draft north map and draft south map Skylonda, and Woodside) – full detailed versions of the thumbnails shown below. Please enjoy these maps and accept our apologies. Thanks for your patience! Drop us an email if you have any questions.

up arrowThe north map covers from Fort Funston south to Pillar Point, including San Bruno Mtn, Sweeney Ridge, Montara Mth, San Pedro Point, and GGNRA's new Rancho Corral de Tierra. That's Coyote Point Recreation Area at far right.

up arrowThe south map covers from Montara south to Martins Beach, and includes the Coastal Trail, Purisima Creek Redwoods and El Corte de Madera Creek Preserves (many purple multi-use trails!) Huddart and Wunderlich Parks, and several little gems east of Hwy 280.

up arrowAbove is a detail of Pillar Point Harbor, plus the edge of Pillar Point Bluffs and Quarry Park in El Granada.
